Safety Improvements Required For Home Electrics

It is interesting to note that in a University electrical laboratory students are limited to dealing with 50v and 3A maximum, yet we are allowed free to use 240v and 13A with virtually no restrictions at home.

So one would question why all new dwellings have to have modern consumer units fitted by law, and older houses do not? Time for a change maybe?

Well you do not have to wait for the law to change as getting your old fuse box changed for a consumer unit is a very straight forwards job for a competent electrician, and should take them less than a day to fit.

If you have just bought an older property then changing an old fuse box over should be your first priority, particularly if you are going to be doing a lot of refurbishment, which may put a higher than normal load on the electrical system.

Firstly there is the safety aspect with regards to electrocution, a modern consumer unit features Residual Current Devices (RCD’s) that sense any current imbalance between the positive and neutral conductors, such as you drilling through the live cable in a wall. The beauty of them is that they sense this imbalance in milliseconds, and cut out the power before it has had chance to electrocute you. This alone for me is a good enough reason for anyone to replace their fuse box as soon as possible.

Secondly unlike a fuse box, the modern units have mini-circuit breakers that do not blow out like a fuse but just trip out, and unlike a fuse they can be instantly re-switched on by flicking the breaker back up. This means goodbye to trying to find the right grade fuse wire in the dark, and no more running out of the right grade of fuse wire full stop.

They can also be fitted with Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overload protection (RCBO’s), which also sense current overload. Whilst the fitment of RCD’s in new boxes is mandatory, the next logical progression would be for RCBO’s to also be made mandatory to fit.

Also the safety benefits in replacing an older fuse box with a new consumer unit far outweigh the cost of fitting, particularly with new eight way units starting from as low as £35 plus the cost of the RCD’s and Mini-Breakers.

By fitting a new consumer unit you greatly de-risk being electrocuted or having an electrical fire, so do it today before it is too late.

Class Portfolio of Laser Sources at Fabtech 2011

Coherent Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq: COHR) showcased it’s new kilowatt class portfolio of laser sources at the Fabtech 2011 trade show held last month in Chicago, IL. The company updated its three-pronged kilowatt class strategy addressing the high power materials processing market, which includes laser cutting, welding, cladding and heat treating applications.

The company presented at the show a kilowatt version of its highly reliable, E-Series CO2 lasers called the DIAMOND E-1000. The DIAMOND E-1000 is a compact design that is up to 80% smaller than competitive offerings, requires no consumables and has been shown to cut metals at similar speeds as lasers with twice the power. In addition to saving space, the compact design allows the DIAMOND E-1000 to be mounted on a robot, eliminating the need for fiber delivery systems.

The DIAMOND E-1000 is joined by the Highlight 8000D, a kilowatt class direct-diode system, which was introduced in June 2011 during Laser Munich trade show. The HighLight 8000D features output powers up to 8 kW and is the most powerful, industrial, direct-diode laser system currently available with smart free space beam delivery – providing high power light in the shape and distance required by the application. With systems already deployed in the cladding market, HighLight 8000D enables the largest area at the highest deposition rate currently available.

Completing the three-pronged kilowatt class strategy is Coherent’s HighLight 1000FL fiber laser. This will be the first product in an OEM-focused kW to multi-kW fiber platform. It utilizes Coherent diode bars in a single step pump aggregation without service incompatible splices or gratings – all coupled into a 50 μm fiber delivery. This uniquely, simple architecture is more feedback resistant and is modular in design to enable future serviceability. The HighLight 1000FL is primarily targeted at cutting and welding of metals, such as mild and stainless steels, copper, aluminum, brass, titanium, and aluminum-magnesium.

The three kilowatt class strategy ensures that any material or process can be achieved using either CO2 lasers, direct-diode systems, or fiber lasers – all from Coherent.

Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a world leader in providing photonics based solutions to the commercial and scientific research markets and part of the Russell 2000. Please direct any questions to Frank Gaebler, Segment Marketing Director at 408-764-4000. For more information about Coherent, visit the Company’s Web site at http://www.coherent.com/ for product and financial updates.

Never Miss a Moment as dabs.com Introduces the Latest Compact and Digital SLR Cameras from Olympus

The new range of retro styled yet technically impressive digital cameras from Olympus are now available at UK computing and technology specialist dabs.com, including the E-P3 PEN SLR and the E-PM1 PEN Mini.

Well known for their innovative and stylish digital SLR cameras, as well as compact‘mini SLRs’, Olympus has been a popular photography brand for many amateur and professional photographers over the years. These latest additions to its line have piqued the interest of many technology blogs and review websites already.

The E-P3 is being marketed as the new standard for the well known PEN product line with a number of new and innovative features. However, it remains in-keeping with the quality and style that hark back to the early PEN models of the 1960s.

The standout feature on this 12.3 Megapixel digital SLR camera is the FAST (Frequency Acceleration Sensor Technology) AF, officially the fastest auto-focus sensor on the market. It means that photographers can catch precious moments or high-speed action shots with the E-P3 and not have to worry about slow auto-focus missing the most important pictures.

dabs.com is also going to be selling the slightly more compact E-PM1 micro four thirds camera. This smaller and stylish addition to the PEN family allows owners to catch professional SLR-like images but without the added complexity of a larger SLR, thanks to its newly redesigned interface which even allows previews of effects before the image is captured.

The E-P3 will be available at dabs.com either as body only or with one of a selection of compatible lenses. The E-PM1 will be available from early Autumn in a number of different vibrant colours.

Vita Audio Radios Sales Hit Record High at Dougbradyhifi.com

Stunning looks, exceptional build quality and an outstanding performance prove a winning combination, with sales of Vita Audio integrated music systems soaring at Dougbradyhifi.com.

Beautifully crafted integrated music systems rarely score top marks across the board, but Vita Audio Systems are an exception. The brand was formed in 2006 and rapidly became one of the leading suppliers of D.A.B radios, with fans enamoured with the exceptional sound quality and sleek retro styling of its digital radios and music systems.

“It’s rare to find such a compact music system with such a high technical specification, let alone one that offers an outstanding performance across the board” says Doug Brady Product Manager Stephen Oakes. Ever since the Vita Audio R4i was released online and at the Cheshire store it has been a bestseller, with customers impressed by the power and quality of sound which can come from such a small music system.

The R4i is the most comprehensive music system from the Vita Audio range, offering the full range of digital media options including a slot loading multi format CD player, USB port for playback of music files and iPod dock in addition to the DAB/DAB+/FM tuner which is a standard feature of the full Vita Audio range.

The Vita Audio R4i combines technology more frequently seen in high quality separates than compact music systems. Vita Audio developed its own powerful speaker and amplifier system for the R4i, using custom designed Class A-B amplifiers developed with discrete component technology. The result is crystal clear vocals, impressive bass thanks to an integrated subwoofer, and good separation of stereo in spite of the close proximity of the speakers, and the 80 watt output is more than enough for a small to medium sized room.

The R4i offers impressive sound and maximum functionality; however the Vita Audio R2i is equally well accomplished, and another bestselling Vita Audio model at Doug Brady HiFi. The R2i may not have the output of the R4i; however its 20 watt output is impressive, and features enhanced 3D sound processing and tone equaliser to get a custom sound to suit all tastes.

The R2i is a regular winner of the full complement of stars in industry reviews, and has picked up many “Best Buy” awards for its design and performance. “It may be small but it really packs a punch, and has surprisingly good range and impressive sound for such a compact system” says Oakes. The R2i features two pairs of gold plated phono inputs, clock and alarm functions and an intuitive remote control and rotodial controller for ease of operation.

Both the Vita Audio R2i and R4i are sold in three attractive veneer finishes and sleek retro styling, and their looks and outstanding performance have proved to be a winning combination at Dougbradyhifi.com with Via Audio sales soaring and hitting record highs.

SpyTown, known for their impressive array of security equipment and assisting schools, businesses, and home owners in security is brining further light to the topic of environmental choices. The company has taken a proactive stance by making conscious business decisions to make a difference and protect the environment in any way possible. With the quickly approaching celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd, many are reminded of how precious the environment is, and how “Going Green” may help preserve it.

SpyTown has maintained a “Go Green” mentality by deciding to no longer print and mail out catalogs in an effort to reduce waste. Forest Stewardship Council, (FSC), certified paper has also been used rather than the standard traditional paper. FSC is a not-for-profit organization that was established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.

In addition to delivering accurate and reliable measurement data, the new transmitters are durable, easy-to-use and easy-to-install. Further, their smooth enclosure finish is resistant to dust and cleaning agents, which means that the transmitters are ideal for installation in cleanrooms and other critical environments with very high level of cleanliness and air quality requirements.

“Maintaining constant environmental conditions in production and storage environments is everything to our customers. The new transmitters incorporate Vaisala’s state-of-the-art HUMICAP® humidity sensor technology with guaranteed high measurement performance, which – especially when used in conjunction with the Vaisala Veriteq Continuous Monitoring System – means that our customers can rest assured that their products remain protected at all times,” says Jan Grönblad, Regional Market Manager for Vaisala’s Life Science and High Technology business.

Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, the transmitters can be either wall-mounted or used with a remote probe for installation in ceilings, chambers or air ducts. Calibration and maintenance are made simple, quick and cost-effective by making the transmitters’ measurement probes fully interchangeable. As a result, calibration does not need to be done onsite, and the probes can be replaced without having to remove and re-adjust the transmitter.
